Tottenham Gives Antonio Conte the Boot

Tottenham Hotspur announced on Sunday, 26 March, that manager Antonio Conte will be leaving the club “by mutual agreement.”

The perfunctory statement on the club’s official website simply said: “We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future,” before adding that assistant manager Cristian Stellini will take over as head coach for the rest of the season.

The 53-year-old – who had only been with the club for 16 months – is the fourth manager to have been sacked by chairman Daniel Levy in four years.

Some publications have dubbed Conte’s dismissal as a “mere formality” after the Italian made headlines on Saturday, 18 March, when he ranted that the players were “selfish” and management was providing “alibis” for their poor performance.

The rant took place during the post-match press conference at Saint Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England, after the Spurs came to a 3-3 draw against their hosts. The stalemate means that the team are out of all cup competitions for the remainder of the season.

An English Premier League record has been set this season, as 11 managers have been released from their positions – including Conte and Everton’s former head coach, Frank Lampard.
